Research at Dartmouth University discovered that when part of a familiar song is played, the auditory cortex is activated and will automatically fill in the unheard portions of the song. This "autocomplete" compulsion is known as a “brain itch“ or "cognitive itch.” Like any itch, the brain itch can recur relentlessly, and the mind-numbing repetition of the itch is referred to as an "earworm." It embeds itself in our minds and forces us to hear a particular tune over and over and over."
